She's a graduate student struggling to complete her thesis; he works at a videostore (which makes for a cute courtship through movie titles). They don't seem like the sort of couple that would last, and yet, casting such desirable leads ensures the passionate chemistry they feel for one another extends to the audience as well. More than a decade after directors such as Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Jaco Van Dormael innovated techniques to dynamically reinvigorate the style of slice-of-life Euro comedy, "Event" suggests where these tricks have settled when used in a slightly less self-conscious way. In this context, there's nothing particularly jarring about cutting to a closeup of the couple's unborn fetus or using narration to shuttle along the pic's timeline. The baby is Barbara's idea, though she hasn't really considered how radically its arrival will change her life. At first it brings the couple closer, as they share all those landmarks that await all parents: breaking the news to a disapproving mother, going in for a sonogram, feeling the little one kick inside its mother's belly. But the stress also takes its toll, and "Event" candidly engages with aspects frequently omitted from the cinematic depiction of pregnancy, such as how they cope with the "hormonal hurricane" that leaves Barbara craving sex and resenting her b.f. By embracing a comedic tone throughout, Bezancon takes the edge off the break-up that seems to be looming on the horizon, while also providing the kind of unique details that distinguish pic from other stories of its kind. Like Trueba and Barroso, Sanchez-Cabezudo made his name as a feature film director.Set in the imaginary Mediterranean town of Misent, "Crematorium" tells the story of a property developer (Spanish actor Jose Sancho), who amasses a fortune by greasing local politicos' palms.Unlike previous Spanish TV series, "Crematorium" was shot almost totally on location, using two production units, and, further aiding its theatrical feel, a 4k digital image, capturing the Mediterranean's colors and light.It also treats some delicate issues -- sex, corruption -- with unusual candor."The series was produced respecting what the story needed, without conditioning factors," says producer Fernando Bovaira, founder of Mod Prods. It cost around $720,000 per 50-minute episode -- on the higher end for a Spanish drama.HBO Latin America has acquired "Crematorium" for a 2012 broadcast slot on its premium TV service. Sold by Vicente Canales's Barcelona-based sales company Film Factory Entertainment, the series has also been bought for Scandinavia by NonStop and Vapet in Czech Republic. Heigh, obsessed with the killing-fields murders, wants to assist, but Souder, leery of being around his ex, prefers to stick with the case they already have, which seems to implicate to a pair of local pimps (Jason Clarke and Jon Eyez). It's corny enough when the pic mentions that even the local Native Americans shunned the killing fields back in their day. But why, one wonders? Was there an ancient burial mound there or something? The screenplay offers no explanation, just as it fails to elucidate just how Souder always knows, as if by magic, exactly where Heigh is when he's about to get into a fight and needs rescuing. That said, there are bits of the film that work well, like a short but credible scene where the detectives ask some African-Americans for information about the pimps, and the lilting banter back and forth between them, what one can hear of it, has the ring of veracity. The aforementioned car chase is also stylishly executed and choreographed; in fact, it's good enough to make the flaws elsewhere seem even more aggravating. A jarring ellipsis where in one scene Anne is followed by one of the pimps, and in the next is seen going for dinner at Heigh's house suggests something went wrong in the editing suite. Joining the roll call of talent submitting less than their best work, d.p.
